# 9 “...after the fire a sound of sheer silence…”
He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’
1 Kings 19:11-13
Father God,
Before Elijah went out to stand on the mountain to wait for you, he went through the cave experience. It strikes a chord in me that in my life, I have gone through various cave experiences. The great wind, splitting mountains, breaking rocks were incidents that caused me to pay attention to you alone. They brought about experiences of terror, trembling, doubts, fear and disappointments, sometimes skepticism. But I praise you because I did not experience hopelessness. There is always this spark of hope remaining in the darkness of my heart and when I finally heard your small gentle voice, I found myself alive again. You would stir up that fainting flame into a fire again after a sheer silence. Is silence even a sound? Never have I noticed the essence of silence, this is like the rests in music, only when everything stops, people pay attention with anticipation. Maybe sheer silence is a sound of the heart, of anticipation and of hope.
Lord, I trust that your presence in my daily life need not be dramatic and obvious. I know I can find you even if I am confined in my cave on the mountain. This cave experience is a precursor to awaken all my senses in order to notice your presence which is always following periods of silence or solitude. Thank you for sustaining hope in me and protecting me from my own discouragement and life’s disappointments.
Amen
